I turned this urn from a 6" dia billet of 7075. I used a custom "round over" cutting tool made by my good friend, Master Scientific Machinist, Andy Huffstutter, to put a nicely rounded lip on the top of this urn. I bored the center hole to accept a 3" dia acrylic sleeve. I then bored 6 radial holes of 2 sizes on 120 degree centers. The small holes are 51/64" dia and the large holes, 1 7/16". I plan on replacing the acrylic sleeve with a glass sleeve so I can put a candle in it. I made this for my wife for Valentines day. She loved it, although not quite as much as her V-Day gift last year, a Smith & Wesson M22A Bull Barrel target pistol.
The marks on the once smooth top rim were the result of a minor accident while turning on the lathe. I was using a three-jaw chuck to chuck the urn internally (spreading the jaws inside the urn instead of clamping on the outside) to put a smooth finish on the exterior when, CLUNK! The darn thing jumped off of the chuck, fell down onto the bed, and got punted into the chip pan by one of the chuck jaws! ALWAYS check your chuck periodically when internally chucking.
